RIFLES FOR TURKEY

SIB AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN'S DENIAL • DAILY CHRONICLE’S ’ ALLEGATIONS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 3. Tho ‘Daily Chronicle,’ commenting on Sir Austen Chamberlain’s _ reply denying that there were negotiations with Turkey for tho sale ot 100,(XX) rifles, claims that it bolds documentary evidence proving that ho has been misinformed. Tho actual sale of munitions was to have been from tire Government to a Birmingham firm, but the Government knew that the firm was only buying to resel, and it had expressly authorised the resale to Turkey. The paper adds: “Sir Austcu Chamberlain is correct in saying that there is nothing in tho law of nations to prevent the sale and resale of munitions, but if .ho means that there are no strong moral or political objections wo entirely disagree. Do Ministers' recognise how much tho cause of world peace stands or falls t with tho cause of disarmament? ”

The 1 Chronicle ’ emphasises that the munitions concerned are actually the property of the Government, and are located in Government stores.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
