FINDENGS NOT KEEPINGS
A woman, for whom Mr W. L. Moore appeared, pleaded guilty to the a quantity of clothing valued at £3 7s 2d, tbo property of Emma Thow.
Chief-dctective Lewis, wbo prosecuted, said that Die young son of tho accused had picked up a laundry ticket and the mother had given him money to obtain tho parcel which the ticket represented. She had then used tbo garments, in one case dying a garment In cover its identity. Accused was a married woman, and -had not been previously before the court.
ifcr Monro said that the husband of accused earned £4 5s a week., and had Ins wife and five children to keep. All the stolen goods had been recovered. Counsel liad impressed upon the woman the fact that she had done wrong in obtaining the clothes, when the ticket was found, instead of communicating with the police. He asked that, as the boy had been dealt with in the Children’s Court,, the name of the mother should lie suppressed. Otherwise the object of the Act. would bo defeated, in that the hoy would be identified.
His Worship said he. had already addressed the husband regarding the mat ter. Tie wished now to impress upon the wife the fact that the home conditions w<Ae unsatisfactory. She was entirely to blame in the present case. However, she would be given a chance, and would be admitted to probation for a period of twelve mouths, during wliich time Ensign Coombs would keep an eye upon her. Slip must realise that, the theft was a serious one. Though very reluctant, to do so, for the. woman deserved no consideration, bn would order the suppression of her name, as its disclosure would identify the hov. DRTT.VFs ENXI'A'S, Janet Hay Tsdale Higgins and a, first offender were each fined 20s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, on charges of drunkenness.
