WEST HARBOR COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING Last night’s meeting of tho West Harbor Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr H. E. Moller), Crs J. M. Eraser, A. Smith, J. T. Downs, J. W. IT. Clarke, T. H. Harridgo, C. M. French, J. Robb, and J. M. Kay. DUNK DIN-PORT CHALMERS ROAD. Tho Town Clerk of Port Chalmers wrote advising that the council had agreed to contribute tho sum of £SO this year towards the maintenance of the Dunedin-Port Chalmers road. The members of tho Port Chalmers Council were of the opinion that every endeavor should bo made through its representatives to request tho Government to allocate portion, of tho license fees collected on motor cars towards the upkeep of secondary roads, and it was hoped the West Harbor Council would assist in that direction. Tho letter was received. A letter was read from Mr H. L. Taplcy, M.P., stating that he had fully explained to the Minister of Public Works all the details of tho recent conference of public bodies interested in the Dunedin-Port Chalmers road. Ho had informed the Minister that it was owing to tho attitude of the Port Chalmers Borough. Council that tho setting up of a Commission had become necessary. The Minister had promised to look into the matter without delay, with a view- to the setting up of tho Commission. The Mayor said that he had interviewed Mr Taplcy in regard to sotting up a Commission. The town clerk had the work well in hand, and every thing from a borough point of view bad been done. The Minister of Public Works wrote advising that ho had approved of tho setting up of a Commission to apportion the cost of the upkeep of the road, and steps would be taken in clue cniirsn to that cud.—The letter was received. REQUEST FOR WATER EXTENSION. A petition was received from eight ratepayers asking tho council to install tho water service in District road. Cr Harridgo said that tho residents were short 'of water in the summer, and as the people had built houses in that locality ho was of tho opinion that tho water should bo installed. Tho Mayor said that if tho residents concerned would come along and offer to pay a certain amount towards tho cost of installing a main, tho council would consider the matter. As the street was not in the water area the residents could not expect the council to bear tho whole cost. The matter was entirely in the hands of tho residents to assist themselves. Cr Fraser said that if the residents concerned were not prepared to make an offer in writing then it was only a waste of time for the council to enter into negotiations. Residents in other parts of tho borough, who were outside the area, had had the water installed through agreeing to pay part of tho cost. The town clerk was instructed to write to tho residents asking what they wore prepared to pay towards the cost of laying on tho water to that part of tho district. CORRESPONDENCE. The District Traffic Manager for tho Railway Department wrote stating that it must be understood that tho continuance of tlic stopping of trains at Maia would depend on the number of passengers making use of the stop.— Tho Mayor stated that a list had been supplied to the council showing that eleven residents, were taking advantage of tho stops at that place. The council had placed a good case before tho traffic manager. _ A fair number joined tho early train for Dunedin, and henceforth tho early train from Dunedin would also stop at Maia. There was now an agitation for tho department to agree to the 5.15 p.m. train from Port Chalmers to stop at Maia.—lt was decided to interview the traffic manager iu regard to this matter.

A letter was received from Mr E. L. Maxwell, of Rothesay, stating that tho sanitary conditions in that part of tho borough were most unsatisfactory in the way of the removal of household refuse.—Tho Mayor said that the matter did not come under tho jurisdiction of the council.—lt was decided that tho town clerk notify Mr Maxwell accordingly. The Secretary of tho New Zealand and South Scaa Exhibition Company wrote advising that matters in connection -with tho railway siding were undecided, as tho purchasers of the Exhibition buildings wished to retain the lino for the purpose of removing tho salvage material.—The Mayor said that the town clerk and Or Fraser bad done good work in connection with the matter, and it was pleasing to know that the necessary work would be commenced shortly. The Secret ary, of tho Workers’ Educational Association wrote stating that owing to tho increased demand for classes it was imperative to secure additional annual subscriptions in order to cope with the classes. The council was asked to consider a proposal to make a yearly contribution.—lt was mentioned that the council wanted all tho money at its disposal to spend on the roads, and under such circumstances it could not assist in the matter.

Mr W. Forgie, of Sawyers Bay, wrote drawing attention to the number of cattle seen wandering around Roscnoath. The animals were ploughing up all tho work that had just been completed, and were also breaking into •residents’ gardens. The cattle came from tho Harbor Board ground at Roscnoath. Ho asked the council to have the nuisance abated without delay.—lt was reported that the cattle had since been removed.—The Mayor said ho would interview the owner, and there would probably bo an end of such, complaints. .A letter was received from Miss If. R. Bardsley, applying for the use of either the Coronation or Druids’ Halls for the purpose of holding physical culture classes. —The request was granted, Miss Bardsley to have the use of tho Coronation Hall one day each week at a small charge.
