TRAINING COLLEGES’ TOURNEY
THE SOCIAL SIDE Those participating in the annual tournament between the Dunedin and Cliristchurch Training Colleges were afforded an opportunity of enjoying the social side of the fixture last night, a highly successful social and dance being held in the Training College gymnasium. Mr A. It. Howie, president of the Dunedin Students’ Executive, occupied the chair, and there was a largo attendance of students of both colleges. An entertaining and diverting concert programme was presented, the most amusing item perhaps being a mock choral contest, Dunedin v; Christchurch. The Glee Club, under thoconductorship of Miss M. Vickers, rendered ‘To the Death,’ and an overture was played by the college orchestra. Other items were rendered as follow;—Song, Miss M. Vickers; humorous interlude, Mr N. Pithcaithly; vocal quartet, Messrs W. Henderson, N. Young, A. R, Drcaver, and Brierly; vocal trio—Messrs Henderson, Young, and Dreaver. Dancing was indulged in between the items, and supj>er was provided by the lady students.
TENNIS WELL-CONTESTED • GAMES. The tennis tournament was commenced on the ’Varsity and Otago Clubs’ courts yesterday afternoon, some interesting and closely-contested games being witnessed. At the close of the afternoon’s play the sots were fairly evenly divided, and the result of this section of the tourney will depend on to-day’s play. Yesterday afternoon’s results were ; —Ladies’ Singles.— Miss N. Percy (Christchurch) lost to Miss G. Cowio (Dunedin), 8-9. Miss N. Cowan (Christchurch) defeated Miss Jv. Carson (Dunedin), 9-6. Miss N. Ives (Christchurch) beat Miss E. Clark (Dunedin), 9-3. —Men’s Doubles. — 0. Robinson and R. J. Carlcton (Christchurch) beat H. A. Henderson and J. M'Cleod (Dunedin), 6-1,- 5-6, 6-4. L. Ashton and C. Marly (Christchurch) lost to A. Notman and A. Forbes (Dunedin), 10-15. —Ladies’ Doubles. — Misses N. Percy and N. Cowan (Christchurch) defeated Misses G. Cowio and K. Carson (Dunedin), 9-4. Misses N. Ives and K. Scott (Christchurch) lost to Misses E. Clark and V. tiloyn. (Dunedin), 2-9. ■—Combined Doubles,— C. Marly ’and Miss Scott ' (Christchurch) beat A. Forbes and Miss Gloyn (Dunedin), 18-16. —Men’s Singles.— L. Ashton (Christchurch) lost to A. Notman (Dunedin), 14-15. BOXING AND DEBATE The boxing contests will bo decided to-night in Manama Hall, and it is expected that there will 'be some very exciting bouts, as the competitors include several who competed with success. at the interuniversity tournament. The debate will be held in the Allen Hall.
