ST. KILDA BAND.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir—Having been a member of Dunedin bands lor many years, I bayo taken a certain amount of interest in tho correspondence on tbe above band. I am not, however, and never have been, a member of that organisation. In your Thst issue U A Subscribe) asks tho secretary what is it doing with its funds, as it depends on the public for its very existence. I rather suspect “A Subscriber” knows something about the cost of running a band (not St. Kilda), and it would be interesting to know in what way bo is a subscriber to tbe latter’s funds. Docs be, like myself, only pay a silver com at the gate or his admission fee at a concert? If so, be has bad value lor his money, which becomes money earned bv tho hand, not a subscription from “A Subscriber.” I can hardly imagine him dictating to a theatre proprietor as to how he is to spend his receipts because “ A Subscriber ” honored tho entertainment with his presence. I think the St. Kilda hand is quite within its rights in spending money earned in any way it thinks best. Subscriptions given for definite purpose would bo on a difloront footing. If the band can u#««eact able players from other cilics to its ranks the public will, in its turn, benefit. With regard to the controversy over the St. Kilda rotunda, tho St. Kilda Council is, I consider, doing right lor two reasons—first, because its hand did all the spado work; and .second, because it is the biggest draw ns a band in Dunedin at present. 1 think the tramways manager would agree with tlie latter reason.—l am, etc., Dim Bandsman. July 1. TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—To my mind the St. Kilda. Band is quite justified in securing the sole right to use the St. Kilda rotunda for Sunday night concerts. It began the business of Sunday night concerts in tho days when the hand was thin and its followers and admirers few and tho Sunday night concerts unpopular. _ It has been pushing along for years trying to build a band, and in gaining its desire has built up a huge following of music lovers, who frequent its concerts regularly, and now when the business is built up to the high standard to which it is, why let other bands reap what St. Kilda has sown? 'The City Council will grant tho Queen’s Gardens and St. Clair rotundas. Let us hear what other bands can do.—l am, etc., T. Muikbead. June 30.
