He turned the fast left-hander Clark to leg for 2, and then touched_ a rising ball into the hands of first slip. Bardsley and Macartney started slowly. Bardsley obviously was suffering. * Every stroke jarred his split finger, and the bat twice slipped from his hands when attempting to drive. Ho again made use of his famous leg glance, but most of tho scoring was left to Macartney, who, however, was patchV. When the total was 62 ha was well held by Nicholson—a running catch.

After getting his eye in Richardson played brighty and made some belly strokes till he was dean bowled by Murdin. Bardsley also brought off many good shots in front of the wicket. The bowling_ was above the average, notwithstanding the absence of Jupp and Thomas, The latter is regarded as one of the best length bowlers in England.

With the score at 11C for four wickets, Ryder joined Bardsley. The former should have been run out when he was 2. J. Timms, at mid-off, stopped a hot drive, but a slow return allowed Ryder to regain his crease. Ryder gave a splendid display of driving. Ho hit out at every ball. Both ho and Bardsley continued to bat freely, and showed bright and dean driving. The score mounted rapidly. Bardsley when 74 gave an easy chance at mid-off off Nicholson, and again when he was 83 off Clark. He reached the century with a chop through the slips off Woolley. Ryder played Murdin to mid-on. and called for a run. Bardsley declined to stir, and a .smart return by Nicholson completed Ryder’s downfall. Ho hit eleven 4’s.

Gregory had a light-hearted knock, and was magnificently caught by Fitzroy on the boundary line jumping high. Bardsley received a further knock on the hand late in the afternoon, but continued to score freely all round the wicket. When the total was 309 ho got his leg in front of a ball from Walden, after an innings which lasted for 280 minutes Be hit eight 4’s. Ponsford played excellently, a.nd was strong on the off-side.—A. and N.2. Cable. •
