The New Zealand representative team to tour Australia was to-day defeated by the Wellington representatives by 21 to 14. To say that, the provincial team was superior to the dominion’s representatives would bo absurd, but its members played sterling games, while it was obvious to many that the New Zealand representatives were not taking any unnecessary risks in view of the important Australian tour. THE TEAMS. New Zealand : Lacks Stevenson, Robilliard, Blake, Elvey, Svenson, Shewn, and Mill; forwards—Porter, Kirkpatrick, C. Brownlie, Harvey, Finlays* Stewart, Knight. Emergencies Hacks, Dailey and Brown; forwards—Alley, Hazlctt, and M, Brownlie. Wellington:' Backs —Malcolm, Mnlfroy, Grenfell, Tait, M'Konzie, Corner, and Braimvoll; forwards —Jessup. Wilson, O'Bogan, Pringle, Mollitt, Thomas, Tyree, rad Taylor. FIRST SPELLThe New Zealand team won the loss and elected to play with the wind. From the kick-off Knight secured and gained a. few yards. Now Zealand was penalised. Robilliard secured and found the lino. From the ensuing play Elvey secured and streaked for the line, but was thrown out. Give-and-take plav followed. From a forward rush by Wellington Tyree kicked hard, but Stevenson was penalised for holding. Malcolm was unsuccessful with the kick. Brownlie secured, but failed to hold the ball when forcing from the ruck. Wellington secured, but Tait kicked hard, Stevenson finding the lino at halfway. New Zealand was penalised for holding, Malcolm finding the line at the corner. From a scrum the Wellington backs secured, but after a good dash failed to score. New Zealand was penalised for lifting feet in the scrum, Malcolm fn'uling- the lino with a good kick. Knight, with the ball at his toes, took play to halfway. Wellington was penalised, and Svensen kicked a goal from inside the halfway, the half striking the bar and falling over. New Zealand 3 Wellington 3 Sheen retired injured, and was replaced by Dailey. Mill, at halfway, transferred to the five-eighths irom the scrum, and the ball travelled through the backs to Elvey, who streaked for the' line and scored a good try, Sveusen converting. New Zealand 8 'Wellington 3 Offside play by Porter gave 'Wellington a chance to goal, but the. ball fell short. From the resultant play llobilliard scoured, and after a good run inpassed to Porter, who was thrown out, from the line-out Mill secured, beat in's man, and then passed to Blake, who scored a nice try, Svensen failing with the kick. New Zealand 11 Wellington 3 Wellington was penalised near its own goal line, Svensen failing with the kick. There was a series of scrums in Wellington’s twenty-five, but New Zealand failed to push homo the advantage. The half-time score was; — Now Zealand 11 Wellington ... 3 SECOND SPELL. New Zealand changed the formation of the team on resuming. Svensen did not take the field, and Porter wont to five-eighth, Brownlie to wing forward, and Alloy into the pack. From a molce Wellington took the ball to Now Zealand’s twenty-five and secured. From the ensuing scrum New Zealand was penalise}!, Malcolm kicking a good goal from outside the twenty-five. New Zealand ... ... ... 11 Wellington ... 6 From a strong forward rush by Wellington Dailey secured and found the lino. From a line-out Wellington again secured, and the ball travelled through ibo backs to Grenfell, who, with a splendid run, scored amidst applause. Malcolm failed with an easy kick. New Zealand 11 Wellington 9 From the kick-off the Wellington forwards secured, and with the ball at their toes took piny to New Zealand’s twenty-five, giving New Zealand an anxious time until a force down relieved. From a scrum in front of the New Zealand goal Stewart was penalised, O’Regan adding the necessary points. Wellington ... ... 12 New Zealand 11 From a line-out Mill secured and passed to Porter, who transferred to Finlayson, who put in a good run until brought down. Play was transferred quickly to New Zealand’s twenty-five, but the latter retaliated and took the ball back to Wellington’s twenty-five, whore the Blacks were penalised, but Mill obtained and found the line. New Zealand was again penalised, and O’Regan kicked _ a difficult goal from near the touch lino. Wellington 15 New Zealand 11 Wellington was now playing with great dash and having the better of the loose play. Grenfell and Stevenson raced for the bail, the latter just getting there in time to force. A good forward rush by Now Zealand transferred play to halfway, but the Blacks were again penalised, Malcolm gaining a few yards with a poor kick. Good work by the New Zealand forwards soon transferred play to Wellington’s twenty-five, but the latter retaliated with a strong rush and soon_ had New Zealand defending hard until a force down gave relief. Offside play by New Zealand gave O’Bcgan a chance. _ The kick was successful, the ball striking the cross-bar and falling over. Wellington 18 Now Zealand 11 Smothering tactics by Wellington were keeping the Black backs quiet and not giving them much chance of showing conbihation. From a melee Bramweil secured and set his backs in action, Tait finishing the movement by scoring a nice try.. O’Regan just failed with the kick. Wellington 21 New Zealand 11 From the ensuing play Wellington was penalised, but the kick was unsuccessful. On the ball coming into play Elvey secured and, after a spectacular run, took play to Wellington’s twentyfive—the best piece of play of the day —the ball travelling to _ Mill, Porter, and Elvey. Finlayson picked up and, racing for the line like a greyhound, scored. Porter failed with the kick. Final: — Wellington 21 New Zealand 14 Mr W. Carson was referee.
