AMENITIES FOR LEPERS.
TO THE EDITOR. gj rj —On my return from the Makogai leper station 1 appealed through the Press for contributions for the purpose of erecting an entertainment hall lor the patients and a rest home for the sisters. . Funds nearly sufficient for this latter object are already in hand, and moneys are now sought for the entertainment hall, in which to give cinema shows with the up-to-date machine provided out of voluntary subscriptions from the New Zealand public. The Fijian Government has a number of other urgent responsibilities, such as reading, electric lighting, radio, freezing plant, etc., for the island of Makogai, and the above deserving objects are regarded as matters for private rather than Government action. A number of contributions have already reached the ‘ Evening Post,’, Wellington, including one from members of the Cabinet for £45 10s, and inquiries have been made from other centres as to where contributions may he forwarded. I should bo glad if it could be found possible for you to make some reference to the fund and also intimate to the public of Dunedin that contributions will be received at the office of your paper. Personally, I regard the object as a most ivoithy one. —I am, etc., Wellington, June 23. M. Pomabb. [Wo shall he glad to acknowledge and forward subscriptions to this fund. —Ed. E.S.]
