Air Lang announced to-day that Viscount Chelmsford, who was formerly Governor of New South Wales, has been appointed Agent-General for Now South Wales in London. The appointment is for an indefinite period. [Viscount Chelmsford, who was educated at Winchester and Oxford, was in turn a member of the London School Board, an alderman of tho London County Council, Governor of Queensland, Governor of Now South Wales, Viceroy of India, and First Lord of the Admiralty in Mr Ramsay MacDonald’s Ministry.] A TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT. STATEMENT BY AIR LANG. SYDNEY, June 15. (Received June 15, at 10.5 a.m.) Referring to the appointment of Lord Chelmsford as Agent-General for New South Wales until a permanent appointment has beon made, Air Lang (Premier) said that ho was opposed to political appointments. Lord Chelmsford holds office on similar terms to those of his predecessor, the late Sir Thomas Coghlan—namely, a salary of £1,850, and an allowance of £BOO. The appointment has been received with general commendation from all parties.
