The expedition has been wiped out by tribesmen. The shock I is almost too much for her, and when j sho finally does recover in the hospital 1 of tho White Sisters of Santa Giovanni ! d'Aza she is firm in her resolve to dedi- ‘ cate her life to the memory of hoi- dead soldier lover. To this end she becomes 'a novice at the hospital. In two years Angela has completed her novitiate, and is reacly to take her vows. At file same j time Giovanni, who survived the uiasI sacre and since has been held captive in the desert, has escaped, and readies Italy, where he is staggered to find Angela a White Sister. In sudden terror she Hies from him. Giovanni is unable to see Angela alone, so in desperation he sends a fake message to the hospital for a nurse, asking that Angola be sent. She comes to the Seven laboratory, : where Giovanni pleads with her to sign a paper ho has prepared, asking for her ) release. But Angela cannot do this, and convinces Giovanni that her vows i are sacred. Nature, as if in sympathy •with the upheaval of these two souls, prepares to devastate the countryside— Vesuvius is in eruption! Giovanni recklessly rides down the mountain to warn the sleeping villagers beneath. In tho tremendous scenes that, follow Giovanni dies, but not in vain, and Angela’s dedication becomes real.
