CORRUPT POLITICS
ALLEGATIONS IN AMERICA TOTING AT PISTOL POINT. I’reaa Association— By Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, June 12. An amazing picture of American political corruption has been drawn by witnesses before the Senate’s Investigation Committee which is inquiring into the expenditure of nearly 1,500,(JOOdol by candidates at the recent primary elections in Pennsylvania, which resulted in the choice or Mr W. S. Yare. The primaries under tho American law provide for a poll among the aspirants for nomination for office at which only regularly enrolled members of the party cast a vote.
One witness declared that one aspirant had 35,000 so-called watchers in one district, each of whom received lOdol, while the total vote cast for this aspirant in that district was less than 50,000. Tho witness said that when the time for paying off came it was like a rush on a bank.
Other witnesses told of voters being held to mark tho ballots, of armed men being brought in, of tear gas bombs being used, and every conceivable form of malpractice used.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
[Last month Mr Yare, of Philadelphia, advocate of light beers and wines, secured the State Republican nomination to the United States Senate, defeating Senator G. W. Pepper, tho previous incumbent, and Governor Pinchot, the dry candidate. Tho wets hailed it as a victory, while tho drys pointed out that the combined votes of Senator Pepper and Governor Pinchot were expected to exceed Mr Varo’s by over 15U,000. Mr Vara’s biggest vote was in the cities, and those of the other candidates in the rural districts. The Republication nomination practically means an election.]
