A debate was hold on Monday in the Labor Club rooms, Princes street, Mr J. Robinson presiding over a largo attendance. Mr R. M‘J)onnell, supported bv Messrs Clifton and Ward, affirmed 1 That Women’s Proper Sphere is in the Home.’ They were opposed by Mrs Kollerd, Miss Egan, and Mrs Herbert. Mrs Mathoson acted in the capacity of judge. Mr MtDonnell, in opening tbo debate, compared ivomdn of to-day to Mrs Jellnby, of Dickens laiye. On the mother rested the responsibility of educating and moulding tbo character of the children. The speaker also drew attention to tha .ever-increasing number of children before the court, attributing this to lack of maternal care. In concluding, lie blamed women for the defeat of Labor at tho recent General Election. For the negative, Mrs Kollerd argued that Mr 11. M‘Donnell was 100 years behind the timqs. The speaker quoted W. Whitman, and referred to the slavery of former years. She contended that an era of tree women meant happiness. _ Her concluding remarks dealt with Florence Nightingale. Helen of Troy, Joan of Arc, and other women of renown. The \udge gave her decision in favor of tho affirmative.
