'MERRIE ENGLAND '

On Wednesday and Thursday, Juno 23 and 24, the Leech Lyric Club Choir will present Edward German’s delightful opera, ‘ Merrio England,’ at His Majesty’s Theatre. As the title suggests, the opera, is redolent in every part of all mat is most characteristic of Old England. Edward German has quite caught the spirit of the times in his work, and the characters of the great Queen Elizabeth, Sir Walter Raleigh, the Earl of Essex, Friar Tuck. Little John, Hobin Hood and his Maid Marion all brought back in exquisite mus.cnl settings. The majestic ‘ Long Live Elizabeth,’ the beautiful diminuendos in ‘ O Peaceful England,’ and the stirring 1 Yeoman of England ’ must impress. Episodes of lighter and humorous nature are introduced in the ‘ Four Men of Windsor,’ 1 The Sun in the Heaven Is High,’ and ‘ When Cupid First the Old World Trod.’ The soloists for the production are Miss Valda M’Curdy as Bessie Throgmorton, Miss Stewart Mitchell as Queen Elizabeth, Mr Arnold Perry as Sir Waltoi Raleigh, and Mr L. A. North in the part of the "Earl of Essex. The Lyric Club Choir will bo supported by an efficient orchestra, and the opera will be under the direction of Mr John Leech.
