BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

BIG YARDIKGS, LOWER PRICES At Buraside to-day sheep and fat cattle sold at somewhat cheaper rates. Pigs too, were easier. Sheep.—A very big entry, 3,766 head. There was a good sprinkling of ewes, and the great bulk of the yarding was made up of good quality ewes and wethers. There were not so many extra prime heavy wethers as at the sale of a fortnight ago. The supply was in excess of the butchers’ requirements, and heavy-weight wethers were 2s or 2s 6d down, while medium and light weights dropped about Is. Extra prime heavy wethers made up to 41s; prime, 33s to 365; medium, 29s to 31s Gd; light, 23s to 26s 6d. Prime ewes made from 23s to 28s; medium, ISs to 21s; old and inferior, to 16s. Lambs.—An entry of about 850 head. The quality was very fair, and competition between the butchers and the freezers was fairly keen. Prices were just about the same as those of a fortnight ago—a little less, perhaps, because there were no lambs of such outstanding merit as the show lambs of the last sale. Prime lambs made from 27s 6d to 30s; medium, 25s to 26s 6d; others, 20s- to 245. Fat Cattle.—A yarding of 370 head. The quality was mixed, there being a lot or cows and heifers, and ordinary steers, while the proportion of extra, prime ox beef was comparatively small. The sale did not start till later than usual, and no prices can be quoted. It seemed likely that there would be a fall in prices, and first sales confirmed that.

Store Cattle.—About 500 head were yarded. There were some very fine cattle from the Lakes district. All well-bred bullocks met with a particularly good demand, and the many cows and heifers yarded sold at recent rates. Four-year-old bullocks made from £lO 5s to £l6 2s 6d.

Pigs.—-There were 114 fats and fifty stores. Prices were somewhat lower.
