BRITISH TAXATION

MR CHURCHILL'S STATEMENT Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Juno 7. “ The Chancellor’s position has not Improved in consequence of recent events in Britain,” was Mr Churchill’s significant rejoinder in the House of Commons, in the course of the committee stage of the Finance Bill, when the House first discussed an Opposition amendment to reduce the tea duty. Mr Churchill added that ho was more inclined to search in the near future for additional sources of taxation than to abandon any of those on which the Budget was balanced. Ho denied the Labor charge that the Government desired to increase indirect taxation, and pointed out that the luxury, taxes were included in the total of indirect taxation, and were raised almost exclusively from luxuries and rich people.

The amendment was defeated by 241 Votes to 105.—Reuter.
