BRITISH GOAL STRIKE

j THE OWNERS’ OFFER \ MR. A. J. COOK’S DECLARATION. 1 Press' Association—By Telegraph— Copyright i LONDON, Juno 6. Mr A. J. Cook, in the course of a speech, said he was prepared to have a ballot of miners and their wives to see whether Messrs Cook and Smith or Messrs Hodges and Parley should represent them, provided, the Government accepted the result and work was started on Monday week. “If it goes against mo, I will resign,” ho declared. “ Anybody who lengthens the , struggle is a murderer. If there is a 1 spark of humanity in the nation the miners will win because only starvation will drive them back. If crying children force men to accept defeat it will be the dearest victory England has ever won.” The decision of the owners’ oiler of an informal meeting will be made to- • morrow.—A. and N.Z. Cable. TAINTED HOMEY FUNDS FROM RUSSIA. • LONDON, Juno 7. (Received Juno 8, at 8.45 a.m.) The ‘Daily Mail,’ in a leading article, says: “The funds that Mr Cook boasts of receiving have not come from the miners of Russia, whose wages are 12s 6d weekly. Russian railwaymen are paid 30s weekly. It is preposterous to suppose that such wretchedly-paid workers provided £370,000 to assist the British miners. It is the Soviet whicn has provided the money for the purpose of working the political and commercial ruin of Britain. These bloodthirsty ruffians do not care twopence about the fate of the miners’ wives or children. They have already allowed thousands of Russian women and children to starve. Mr Cook and Mr Smith freely accept tainted money, forgetting i ' *o the British coalfields are idle the Russian mines have been devcouo "m starvation wages. The Government must stop Russian money being sent, .which is a violation, of the Anglo-Rus-sian Treaty.”—Sydney 1 Sun ’ Cable.
