DENIAL BY THE TRADE

“ M 3 O’REGAH fS GUESSING " The above telegram was shown this morning to Sir A. Pnape, and this is his reply: “I have a reputation for playing fairly. If not prepared to speak on the subject I would say so. But I am prepared to make you an answer, and it is this: that 1 am ui close touch as a. member of tho executive with tho New Zealand Licensed Victuallers’ Association, and am also on tho National Council, and 1 say unreservedly that 1 do not know of any such arrangement. If there was any arrangement of tho sort I should certainly know of it, and I give you my word that I do not know. The matter has not even been discussed. The position lies entirely in the hands of tho members of Parliament, and our Dunedin members have definitely committed themselves to oppose any extension of tho licensing term. Speaking generally it is admitted that it would be an advantage to everybody to have longer Parliaments, but if such a reform is mooted it is news to me, and certainly has nothing to do with the licensing question. Sly friend, Mr O’Regau, is guessing.”
