TREATMENT OF VOLUNTEER SEAMEN [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 15. Speaking on behalf of the other volunteers on board the Athenic, one man stated yesterday that when the Waimana reached Liverpool from Auckland they were met by an official from the High Commissioner’s Office, who gave them useful information and advice. From Liverpool the Waimana proceeded, to London, and on the night of their arrival the men were placed at various boarding-houses at the espouse of the company. Next day the men received their wages for the voyage, and each man was given a bonus of £4. 'When some of rtho men ran short of money they were all given a second bonus of £2, and later ari additional £l. In spite of this generous treatment, some of the men, became hard up and applied to the company for further relief. They were then allowed 7s per week pocket money. It was remarked that over 300 volunteer seamen went to Itngland in Shaw, Savill steamers, and that they all received the same liberal treatment. The men also speak in appreciative terms of the treatment received on the return journey. . On behalf of all the Wannana’s volunteer seamen one of their number forwarded a letter of thanks _to the manager of the company in Itngland for tlm generous treatment accorded to them.
