MANCHESTER UNITY

The meeting of the Loyal Queen of Otago Lodge was the occasion of the annual official visit from the surrounding sister lodges. The attendance was large, Loyal Dalton (Alexandra) being well represented. The XTov. G.M., Bro. A. M. Wylie, was also in attendance. A. Dutch auction was held, LAG. Bro. Sinclair acting as salenian in such a manner that a substantial sum was raised for the social fund. Prov. G.M. Bro. Wylie gave an interesting account of ins tour of .North Otago, and responses were duly made by other visitors. Dancing was indulged in hoaritly, and a loaturo was made ol n substantial supper provided by the lady members of the lodge. Loyal Princess Mary Lodge meeting was well attended, Sister Dunlop presiding. Four members were initiated in due form, P.G. Bro. Jsaaesluid Bro. Riddell acting as conductors. Three candidates were proposed for membership. Regret was expressed at the coming loss of Sister Cooper, leaving for Auckland, and it was decided to Judd a basket social evening as a send-oif. A syllabus for the half-year was framed, and interesting meetings are anticipated. ... Loyal Price of Wales Lodge initiated four candidates to membership, the officers being in good form, an impressive ceremony resulted. Pour proposals for membership were received. P.G. Bro. Thorn, H. Campbell, and iM/.cdonald are especially busy on the membership campaign, and the lodge is Bteaclily growing in numbers. The first basket social of the year was .held, mid proved a great success, some eighty couples being in attendance. Dancing was heartily indulged in, and a substantial sum was raised towards the funds. Tho music was supplied by Bro W. Himmol, P.C.R., Court Enterprise. Loyal Prince Alfred Lodge Lodge, Waikouaiti, was visited by a contingent of thirty from Loyal Prince ol Wales Lodge, Port Chalmers. They were in coived in good style by a good attc idnnco of local members, headed by A'.G. Bro. Willcock. Visits to Waikouaiti are infrequent, and the opportunity was taken to exchange views on general questions, ft was announced that t'.o Prince Alfred Lodge would celebrate its jubilee in August, and intended to mark tho occasion by a gathering of Oddfellows from all parts. A good musical programme of some twenty items was provided, and, iu addition to the loyal and fraternal toasts, a special feature was made of that- of tho “i\ow Zealand and South Seas Exhibition” and one of a novel kind, ‘‘The Land We Live In.’ This latter proved the gem of the evening ns successive generations of members spoke on tho question, and much early history wai recounted. The gathering concluded abou; midnight with an exchi-.pr of cheers.

A lull report of discussion on hospital fund scheme was presented Discussion of the matter was postponed till tho district business paper was received. A card tournament was played with members of Unity Lodge, 1.0.0. F., and after a good tussle Caversham won the shield trophy by two games. An interchange of courtesies brought an interesting evening to a close. A feature of tho northern tour of the Otago District Executive was a largo gathering held in the Oamnru Lodge room. N.G. Bro M'Narry extended a warm welcome, and one candidate was initiated. A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late Bros. T. Johnston and Macdonell. Prov. G.M. Bro. A. M. Wylie made a presentation of certificates to P.G. Bros. P. Milligan and Gray, and of a sash and apron to P.G. Bro. W. Edwards, the latter having completed a second term. Responses were made to tho “’Visitors” toast by Loyal Port Molyneux, Nasohy, Hand_ and Heart, Heart of Friendship (Waimate), and Baud of Friendship. A social hour was spent in song and story, and a toast list was honored. That of tho ” Otago District ” was enthusiastically received. It was responded to by the members of the executive present in happy manner. They outlined tho policy and progress of the district, and. urged on members a continuance of their good work. During tho evening a musical programme was contributed to by D.P.G.M. Bro. G. Clarke, P.P.G.M. Bro. Rosevenre, P.G. Bro. W. Grave, Bros. W. M'Grcgor, W. Cooper, It. Oats, and J. Minty. ‘ Auld Lang Syne ’ closed a pleasant evening. Loyal Band of Friendship Lodge, Kakanui, received a visit from the District Executive on tour. N.G. Bro. P. G. Tyson presided. Prov. G.M. Bro. A. M. Wylie presented Pei* Sec. Bro. Win. Barnett with a medal for proposing twenty-five new members into the lodge. The Prov. G.M. spoke of the splendid work of Bro. Barnett for tho lodge in this and other matters, and thanked him in tho name of the district for his earnest attention to lodge work. Bro. Barnett feelingly replied. During the evening a framed enlarged photo of P.G. Bro. Gallagher was placed on the walls of the lodge room. Bro. Gallagher was for many years the valued permanent secretary of tho lodge, and went through some interesting experiences. Although now resident in Oamaru, he still retains an active interest in the lodge, acting as a trustee. Bro. Gallagher was Heartily cheered on returning thanks. The members of the District Executive addressed the meeting, giving interesting information. A social evening was spent, when community singing was indulged in and items were rendered by Bros. Maffev, Goodsell, Minty, Oates, and D.P.G.M. Bro. Clarke. The gathering was a bright one and much enjoyed by all. The tour of the executive concluded at Ngapara on Saturday, when another well-attended and hearty gathering took place, many visitors being present,.
