The Paris correspondent of the * Daily Express ’ states that the production of tho film ‘ Madame Sans Gene ’ occasioned a remarkable incident suggesting the trend of public opinion in France. When the figure of the “ Little Corporal ” vras thrown on the screen the entire audience was electrified and rose as one man, cheering and shouting “ Dictator! Dictator! Long live Napoleon!” The ovation lasted for several minutes. Publicists, however, though they admit that a dictator would have no difficulty in seizing power, state that a strong man has not yet appeared. M. Herriot, at a meeting of the Radical Socialists to-day, quoted striking statistics showing tax-dodging. He stated that whereas 570,000 persons owned private motor cars, only 257,717 in France paid income tax on incomes above 30,000 francs. M. Herriot added that tho possession of a car thus means an income of £23O.—A. and N.Z. Cable. THE SYRIAN MANDATE. PARTS, December IS. Tho Senate, following a debate on the position in Syria, carried a vote of confidence in the Government.—Reuter. A SCHEME PROPOSED. PARIS, December IS. (Received December 19, at 9.5 a.m.) A group of prominent industrialists presented President Doumcrgnc with a scheme intended to save tho franc and stabilise the finances. President Doumergno is reported to he elated. M. Briand declared that the scheme gives tho Government great international power. Meanwhile M. Herriot uncompromisingly opposes M.
