Downing street, in which the Prime Minister of Britain has his residence, was named after Sir George Downing, “ a sidcr with all times and changes, skilled in the common cant, and a preacher occasionally.” He was sent by Cromwell to Holland as Resident there. After the Restoration he espoused the King’s cause, _ and was knighted and elected M.P. in IG6I.
