[From Oun Coriiesponiunt.] It has been recognised for some time now that tho hall is in need of some attention in the way of. renovating work. Tho committee of the Ratepayers’ Association has under consideration plans for tho carrying out of these much-needed improvements, and it is hoped that satisfactory arrangements will bo made in this direction. The hall, which was brought into being a few years ago by the energetic efforts of a number of local and week-end residents, lias proved a valuable asset in the social life of the community, and no doubt when the contemplated renovations are effected tho added comfort and convenience will be much appreciated by both residents and visitors to the district.

Tho fancy dress and poster dance promoted by the Ratepayers’ Association for Labor Day night promises to be one of tho most successful functions of its kind yet held in the local hall. The committee appointed to arrange the details Is working hard with a view to having thorn complete, and its efforts are sure to have an adoeprate reward. Tho Mexicano Orchestra has been engaged to provide tho music, and “ trippers of tho light fantastic ” are looking forward to a pleasurable evening. Prizes are to bo awarded to the lady and gentleman in each section whose costumes meet with tho approbation of tho judges. In order to cater for the visitors’ requirements buses will leave Dunedin and Portobello for the danco. An entertainment of a varied and pleasing nature, and one which the local residents do not often have an opportunity of attending, was given in the hall last Saturday night by the Paramount Variety Entertainers. The function was arranged by Mcsdames Churchill and Pearson with a view to the funds being given towards the liquidation of the debt on tho vestry, and as the performers gave their services gratis the result should bo gratifying to the promoters. Mr F. M'Grath. with his lady partner, was clover at the card manipulating, and as a lightning skctchcr he proved an adopt. Carlton Yalasco, with his pal “ Claude ” (a speaking doll), created a lot of amusement by his ventriloqninl efforts. Carl and Miss Marvelli kept tho attention of tho audience by their magical stunts, and later with M'Grath Carl demonstrated his prowess ns a handcuff expert, etc. The Matting Bros.’ turn as amateur comedians was appreciated, and as • a result of her vocal effort Miss Gwen Cooper had to respond to an encore. Balgain and Scacon proved very clever jugglers, their deft handling and swinging of clubs, etc., being a treat. Mrs Kellott played the accompaniments for tlie entertainment, at the conclusion of which the performers wore accorded a hearty vote of thanks, carried by acclamation. The singing of the National Anthem followed, after which an enjoyable dance was hold. Another successful season in connection with the Glee Club is drawing to a close, and it has been decided In give the, final concert of the season in the hall on Saturday night. An excellent programme has been arranged, and, as in tho past, an enjoyable entertainment may bo looked forward 10, at the conclusion of which a dance will be held. Buses will leave Manse street at 7.ffO p.m., and this will enable the town folk to be present. Mr M. Connelly, the Labor camlidafe for the Chalmers electorate, addressed the electors at Macandrows last evening. Mr S. Ingram, who was voted to the chiar, briefly introduced the speaker. Mr Connolly gave an interesting speech, dealing with the main questions of his party’s platform, and at its conclusion a number of questions were asked and satisfactorily answered. The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks for his address.
