HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARD
HEETING OF COKtMB The monthly meeting of the governors of the Otago High Schools’ Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Dr G. E. Thompson (chairman), Mrs S. M. Park, the Hon. D. T. Fleming, and Messrs J. M. Galloway and H. Webb. RECTOR’S REPORT. Tho monthly report of the rector (Mr W. J. Morrell) stated that the total number of boys upon the school roll was 614. of whom 195 were seniors, 396 juniors, and 23 paying pupils. The school was visited on October 12 and 13 by the inspectors, largely with the object of settling recommendations for senior free places and for leaving certificates. As a result 125 boys were accepted for the award of a senior free place’ without exanunation as from the beginning of next year, and thirty-nine for higher leaving certificates. Report adopted. LADY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The Lady Principal (Miss M. H. Xing), in her report, stated that the average attendance was ill. On October 8 and 9 the inspectors visited tho school for the purpose of examining candidates for senior free place. Ninetysix recommendations were confirmed; forty-five candidates, of whom twelve were eligible for extension of junior free places', were requested to sit for the intermediate examination.
The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported that it had received from the rector and lady principal their proposals regarding the establishment and maintenance of reference libraries at tho schools. It recommended —(1) That an expenditure of £250 bo authorised for the purchase of books for tho Girls’ School, and also an annual expenditure of £25 for upkeep; (2) that the question of a library for the Boys’ School be held over pending the provision of suitable accommodation. Regarding the proposal to install a new boiler in tho swimming baths, it could not recoin- | mend the installation at present. With i reference to the department’s letter re the gills’ hostel, the committee anlin-i pated no difficulty in arranging for a loan of £IO,OOO or £12,000 from the Bank of New Zealand for the erection of buildings, but it was unable to recommend the board to accept responsibility for the cost of furniture. It recommended that the department bo asked to say from what source it expected the "board to provide for this expenditure. Report adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. Tho Works Committee reported that it had now received from .Messrs Mandolin and Fraser, architects, a report on tlie question of strengthening and, if possible, arresting the movement, at the science building at the Boys’ High School. It had made proposals which, if carried out, were estimated to cost £')OU to £790. The committee recommended that a copy of its report be Mihmittecl to iho District Engineer, Public Works Department, for his comments, and that upon receipt of his reply it ho empowered to submit,the matter to the Education Department for its decision and instructions. The report was adopted. GENERAL. Mr P. W. Shaddock wrote offering to present curios and photographs to the Givis’ High School—Accepted with thanks. , It was decided that Mr I)rank. Tate s report on post-primary education in New Zealand be submitted to the Appointments Committee and also reloned to the rector and tho lady principal. It was reported that tho total credit bale ace amounted to £1,399 2s lid.
