LADIES’ HOCKEY
OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND DRAW These teams met at Culling Park. The southerners attacked from the outset, but Otago defended strongly. Miss Gardiner, on the wing for Southland, was opening up the play, but the heavy ground, prevented good passing, Miss Hanlon, for Otago, got away, and play for a while hovered about midlield, Otago eventually making a determined attack on the Southland goal, the ball just missing the net. A corner was conceded, but the visitors took possession and again returned to the attack. Several shots at goal were unsuccessful. The half-time whistle sounded with no score. it was raining steadily when play was resumed. Otago was the first to score ; Miss Hanlon centred to Mrs Purvis, whose shot went high, hut beneath the bar. Otago 1, Southland 0. The visitors again took the offensive, and carried the game to Otago’s circle, vhere it remained most of the lime! Miss Guest repeatedly shot, hut always the halMrent a little wide. With seven minutes to go Southland was still attacking. Miss Garden, with a hard shot _to centre, gave Miss Guest an opening, which was accepted. Final score; Otago ... ... ... I goal. Southland ... ... ... 1 goal.
