Air W. 11. Price, Christchurch mammor for the Union Company, wont home to-day after a business visit to Dunedin. Mr 11. T. Troveua was a passenger by the 11.30 train to-day, on bis way to Wellington to judge at the horticultural shows there and at ilutt Valley. Air E. 11. Lough travelled to Oamaru Alnsley, S.AL, went lo Timaru by to-day’s train, leaving Dunedin at 11.30. Air H. Sydney Smith, of Auckland, who has been visiting the Kawarau Gold-mining Company’s works, started for the north this morning. Air A. W. Macdonald (Eraser and Co.l went to Christchurch to-day on business. Captain Foster, marine superintendent of the Union Company, went from Dunedin to-day for Wellington, Air E. G- Eagles, accountant at the Chief Post Office, Dunedin, is recovering from the illness for which he underwent an operation six weeks ago, and is now able to get about a litfhw All C. R. Ingram is meanwhile relieving him of duty. In a brigade order issued by Colonel ■Barclay, commissioner in charge ql the Si. John Ambulance Brigade in Now Zealand, it is notified'that Colonel W. J. Strong, of Dunedin, _ has been appointed as assistant commissioner _ iu charge of the Otago district. Major W. 'Fleming, who formerly held the position, recently tendered his resignation after having rendered much valuable service for the Order of St. John. At tlio function in connection with the celebration of Association Day at the Commercial Travellers’ Club on Saturday night, Air James Brown, the newiy-appointed president of the United Commercial Travellers^and Warehousemen's Association ol New Zealand, was presented with Ids badge of office. Air F. W. Mitchell, in making the presentation, referred in eulogistic terms to the great work the recipient had done on behalf of various associations during the past forty years. Alany outstanding preachers have from time to time occupied various pulpits and pastorates in Dunedin. Judged upon the high standard of his addresses yesterday, the Rev. C. Alaitlaml El lias, of Brisbane, who was conducting his first- Monday services in the United Congregational Church, is likely to take rank amongst these. The attendance at the evening service, at which the soloists were Aliss Alice Wilkinson and Mr George Dyer, was specially large. A public welcome will be given to Air Elliss at the church tomorrow night. Those staying at the Grand Hotel arc Air J. Cawley (London), Messrs S. Smith and P. A, Bruford (Auckland), Air J. Le Fine and J. Walker (Wellington). Air and Airs South (Auckland), and Dr and Airs Scott (Oamaru). A Sydney cable announces the death of Air'S. J. Tnpprell, who was formerly attached to the staff of the ‘Daily Telegraph/ and later was editor of the ‘ Evening News.’ A Reuter message from Ottawa states that Air Croft, Assistant Trade Commissioner in Auckland, lias been promoted to the rank of Commissioner; grade 1.

Pix, a prominent and popular member of Iho tramway service lias been removed. Air Pix entered that sendee in 1007, and was a. familiar figure as a motonnau in the city cars for some years past, IJo was prominent in the affairs of the Tramway Employees’ Union and of the Social Club, and was also a. skilled amateur billiardist. Deceased, whoresided at. 175 AJelbonrne road, took ill last night, and, though fata] results were not anticipated, lie passed away very suddenly this morning, lie, was forty-five years of age., and leaves a. widow and a largo family.
