LIQUOR SOLD TO NATIVES
SUBSTANTIAL FINES [Per United Press Association.] WANGANUI, August 20. The serious nature of the offence of supplying liquor to Natives for consumption off licensed premises was emphasised in the Magistrate’s Court by Mr J. S. Barton, S.AL, when he imposed heavy fines on men of that offence. He added that next time similar cases occurred in this district ho would- impose tho maximum penalty. Joseph Domhroski and Knaki Wallace wore charged with tho abovementioned offence. Gordon Chisnall was charged with aiding and abetting Domhroski. The police stated that Wallace arranged with Chisnall to supply tho beer which was ordered hy tho latter, hut ho found no container available in which to take tho liquor away. Later Domhroski called with a cream can, and took away five gallons of liquor to a Native’s residence, where eight Maoris were waiting for it. Domhroski was fined £2O, and Wallace and Chisnall £ls each.
