MONTHLY MEETING Mr t eorgo Black presided over the monthly meeting of tho committee, held in the society’s board room to-day. 1 EXECUTIVE’S REPORT. The executive reported that His Excellency the Governor-General and Lady Fergusson had accepted the committee’s invitation to attend the show, and would arrive on the grounds at 2.15 p.m. on Thursday, November 19. The executive recommended that arrangements be made for the Boy Scouts to form a guard of honor. The executive had granted the Girl Guides’ Association tho use of the park for two weeks at the end of January after the grounds have been vacated by the Boy Scouts, and also have given permission to the Motor Association to use a portion of the grounds for campiim purposes during tho term of the Exhibition. In each case conditions have been laid down that all damage must be made good and the grounds kept clean. Tho Dunedn City Council has been requested to arrange with tho Railway Department for the necessary repairs to the Tahuna Park line, and for the conveyance of stock to and from Tahuna Park. It is expected that stock returning from tho Royal Show in Christchurch will reach Dunedin about noon on Saturday, November 14, and the council has been asked to see that the line is available on that date. The executive reported that the following judges nominated have so far accented ;—Corriedale and merino, Mr \v. MTlao, Waikari; Border and English Leicester, Mr John M'Crostie, Invercargill; fat stock, Mr W. Falconer, Makarewa; Lincolns, Mr H. J. Andrew, Maheno; shorthorn, Mr A. Chamberlain, Christchurch; Friesian, Mr H. E. Johnston, Havvera; Red Polled, Mr A. Heckler, Romahapa; hackney and carriage horses, Mr J. Macniven, Hawke’s Bay; competitions, Mr J. Macniven, Hawke’s Bay; Ayrshire, Mr A. Montgomerie, Palmerston North; draught horses, Mr Alex. Campbell, Morton. On tho motion of the president the executive’s report was adopted.

GROUNDS COMMITTEE. Mr T. T. Ritchie moved the following report of the Grounds Committee, which stated:—The boundary fence at Tomahawk road has been repaired, and men have been employed fixing up the cattle and sheep pens. The committee found some difficulty in obtaining suitable material to topdress the park at a reasonable price. To secure the best results and to ensure the grass taking proper root in time for the show, the topdressing should have been d6ne some months ago; consequently the committee has decided to simply topdress the bad pieces at an estimated cost of £SO for material and labor. To facilitate the removal of hurdles, fence material, etc., instructions have boon given to secure a hand cart at a cost of £lO, which will be a considerable saving of labor and biro of horse and dray.— Adopted. CATTLE COMMITTEE. Mr James Macandrow submitted the following report of the Cattle Committee :—ln reference to the exhibitor’s letter referred to them in connection with the difference of opinion in regard to the age of fat cattle exhibited at the last Winter Show, the committee after making most careful inquires recommend that the present arrangements to refer all such disputes to the society’s veterinary surgeon is the only way to arrive at a prompt and final settlement. The committee further reports that it has added to the schedule classes for shorthorn milking strain, as it considered this section should be included in our schedule. These classes will add an additional £27 to the prize money.—Adopted. DRAUGHT HORSES. The Draught Horse Committee reported: We recommend that stallions entered for the Clydesdale Horse Society’s “Wright, Stephenson Cup should be examined in the Otago Farmers’ Association’s yards the day previous to the parade, and at that examination no person, with the exception of the stewards duly appointed, the owner, and his groom, he permitted to bo present. The committee appointed by the Clydesdale Horse Society— Messrs James Gow, J. W. Blair, and J. A. Johnstone—have made some alterations in the conditions. The new cup is valued at 75gs, and is a perpetual ono, and to be awarded for the best Clydesdale stallion or entire colt throe-year-old. All animals competing for this cup must ho passed by a veterinary surgeon and certified to by the committee specially appointed for the purpose that the animal has left a certain percentage of foals. No animal having once been awarded the first prize, and had his name engraved on the cup, will be eligible to compete at any show at which this perpetual cup is being competed for.—Adopted. GENERAL. Mrs Margaret Grant and Mr Fred. Freeman wrote thanking the members of committee for their kind resolutions of sympathy. The Secretary of the Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association wrote advising that they would bo pleased to grant the use of their horse bazaar for the purpose of inspecting stallions entered for the horse parade.—The secretary was instructed to thank the Otago Farmers’ Association for their generosity in granting the free use of their saleyards. The Secretary of the New Zealruid Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association wrote advising that their council would he pleased to donate £2O, to be allocated as special prizes at the forthcoming show. They suggested that £5 ho allocated for the champion Jersey bull and a similar amount for the champion Jersey cow, the balance to ho allocated at the discretion of the executive.—The secretary was instructed to thank the Jersey Association for their generosity, and the allocation of the balance was left in the hands of the Cattle Committee.

The Secretary of the Otago Harbor Board wrote advising that at iv meeting of the hoard it was decided to add a clause to tbo lease of Logan Park which would enable the society to deal with the City Council in connection with the utilising of a porton of the park for show purposes. Correspondence was read with the Defence Department in reference to obtaining the use of tents for the purpose of providing accommodation for attendants at the show. Regret was expressed that the Defence Department could not see its way clear to grant the society the use of tents, especially considering what assistance the society had granted in allowing the, free use of the park on several occasions. The question was referred to the executive to deal with.

Correspondence was read with Messrs Reid and Gray in connection with exhibiting agricultural machinery at the summer show, which was noted. Hon. W. Nosworthy (Minister of Agriculture') and the Director of Agriculture wrote in reference to the resolution passed at last meeting in connection wUJj'the importation of wood pigeons. After some discussion, in which one of the members of committee stated definitely that these pigeons arrived by the Athenic in Auckland last November, and were no doubt liberated, the secretary was instructed to write to the Minister accordingly. The Secretary _ of the Ne\v Zealand Friesian Association wrote advising that his association had decided to donate two silver cups, each valued 20gs, for the best Friesian male and the best Friesian female exhibited at the forthcoming show, the cups to he won outright and to he competed for under ordinary champion conditions. Tho Secretary of tho Now Zealand Meat Producers’ Board wrote asking that a photograph be taken of the record containing the original account sales and a photograph of the ship Dunedin' conveying the first consignment of frozen meat from Otago, and instructions were given that the ini. quest of the Meat Board he carried out and a proof of same be submitted to the Meat Board for its approval. Messrs Jos. Mosley and Sons advised that they intended exhibiting at the Royal Show, in Christchurch, and would exhibit their stock at Dunedin provided that satisfactory arrangements were made for tho return of, the stock. —The Secretary reported that it was not possible to ascertain definitely arrangements for returning stock, but, according to last year’s records, stock exhibited at the Christchurch Show would leave for the south at 9.15 p.m., arriving in Dunedin at 1.15 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, and arrangements would he made for immediate conveyance to the grounds. Messrs Mosley and Sons to be advised accordingly. At the close of the business the President referred to the transfer to London of Mr A. C. Ross, dairy instructor. Mr Ross has been closely associated with the society for many years, and has rendered most valuable assistance both at the winter shows and in connection with the cheese -grading and various competitions, and moved—- “ That this meeting place on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by Mr A. C. Ross, dairy instructor, to the society, and desires to congratulate him on his appointment to so important and responsible a position which the committee has every confidence he will fill with credit to himself and to the best interests of all concerned.” _ It was decided that the next monthly meeting should be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, owing to the horse parade being held on the same date.
