BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETS Dr G. E. Thompson presided at the monthly meeting yesterday of tiie Board of Governors ot the Utago Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools. Also present were the Hon. D. T. Caughieyj, increased accommodation for tae Boys’ High School, should the attendance at tue school increase to 700, could be provided by two portable rooms. A ■ reply is to be sent asking the department to arrange for the architect of the Otago Education Board to erect a temporary room at once. A proposal to alter the method by which the board administer?- its endowment lands was made by a deputation from the Sheep Owners’ Union, consisting of Messrs James Begg and W. 0. M'Keilar. They wanted the pastoral leases run on the basis of Crown lands', and for this it was understood that legislation would be needed. —After a full discussion the deputation retired, and the matter was referred to the Endowment Committee. The report of the rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr W. J. Morrell) stated that the total number of bovs upon the school roll was 635, including 200 seniors, 408 juniors, and twenty-seven paying pupils. The corresponding totals' for August, 1920-24, were respectively 473, 516, 563, 569, and 585, It would be noticed that the difference of thirty between the numbers for May 1, 1925, and March 1, 1924, had increased to fifty, bearing out the impression that the majority of boys wishing to find employment during the year had done so before the actual opening of the school, or at any rate did not re-enter. Following the example of last year, a commemoration service had been held in the school hall on Sunday, August 9, the day preceding the anniversary of the foundation of the school. The service, which was under the auspices of the Old Boys’ Society, was conducted bv the Bov. A. C.‘W. St""-*"-"' - ‘ - 1 f the school. The ceremony was most impressive, and they were indebted to Mr Standage tor- a very able anu appropriate address. The school’s first fifteen was congratulated upon its performances at Christchurch. Miss M. H. M. King, lady nrincipal of the Girls’ High School, reported that the roll number was as follows: Senior free place, 154; junior free place, 314; fees, 6; total, 474. In 19?- ,t the total was 474, in 1923 467, and in 1922 447. The average attendance for July was 440. Both reports were adopted.
