FORBURY TROTTING RACES

HOSPITABLE RECEPTION TO AMERICANS SOCIAL BUT FRUGAL CROWD Visitors from Christchurch say that there were more of Uncle Sam’s naval men at Forhury yesterday than the total of those who attended the six days’ racing at Riccarton ami Addington. Our own citizens turned uni well, too, and it was a joll,y picnicking crowd, bent rather on pleasure than nionov-making. Tho aggregate investments on tho totalisator came to only £19,3394. Tho racing was interesting but not oxciting. It was well managed by the president (Air Irwin), the vicepresident (Mr Samson), and other members of committee, and the officials did their duty most efficiently, recognition being specially due to Mr Brinkman (hamlicappcr). Mr Dunne (starter), Air Rudkin (judge), and Air W. F. James’s totalisator staff. Tho final results were as follow: —

STARS AND STRIPES HANDICAP (Harness), SOOsovs; second GO, third 30. Unhoppled trotters. 2m. 2—C. Samson’s Money Spider (Lorene Todd —Mantle), 24yds (J. McLennan) 1 I—D. Teahen’s Lazarus, 81yds (T. Wallis) * 2 4_W. J. Moir’s Ingle Bingen, 36yds (N. L. Price) 3 Others: 3 Swiftbine 24yds and 5 Bonnv Spec 4Syds. Money Spicier broke at once. Ingle Bingen’ broke and lost the load to Money Spider and Bonny Spec. Swiftbine’s break put him right back. Ingle Bingen wont in tho air again, but recovered, and at a mile all but Swiftbine were close together. Lazarus was fast drawing to the front when he boggled half a mile from home. Thereafter it was a race between Atonoy Spider and Bonny Spec, and the latter galloped at the finish, Aloney Spider winning hy a head, Lazarus twenty lengths away, Ingle Bingen next. Bonny Spec being disqualified for not being adequately chocked when he galloped, Lazarus got second money. Time, 4min 45see.

RALEIGH HANDICAP (Harness), 25flsovs; second ol), third 25. 1m Sf. 6—A. AJ‘Leila n’s Cottage Girl CFour Chimes—Lady Alontcfiore), scr (Owner) 1 5—J. G. S. Holmes’s Transport, scr (N. L. Price) 2 10—L. C. Morrison’s Glen Farg, scr

(Owner) 3 Others: 1 Pear! Coronado scr, 9 Kate Thorpe scr, 8 Wairua scr, 4 Silver Bard scr, 7 Dolly Boui scr. 2 ivy Audubon 12yds coupled with Ratnna 48yds, 3 Oakland SGvds*

A good start. Pearl Coronado skipped after leaving the mark and fell back to last place, Kate Thorpe led Glen Farg and Transport.. Pearl Coronado lay fourth after three furlongs, but broke again and once more took the rear position. Kate Thorpe led Glen Farg, Transport, and Cottage Girl into the last lap. Glen Farg and Cottage Girl were first into tho straight, and in a merry finish Cottage Girl won hy half a head from Transport. Glen Farg a neck away, and Pearl Coronado a length further back. Time, 3min 49scc.

FLEET HANDICAP (Harness), oOOsovs; second 60. third 30. Im. 4—T. Twomey’s Irish Whispers (Logan Pointer—Rothschild marc), scr (J. T. Twomcy) 1 2—S. Hawthorne’s Dillon Wilkes, 24yds (A. Butterfield) 2 1--A. Fleming’s Double Event, 12yds (Owner) 3 Others: G Diamond Child scr, 3Peter King scr, o Harcwoocl 12yds.

Irish Whispers began smartly, shelving the way to Peter King ami Double Event. _ This order was maintained for half a mile, when Dillon Wilkes got close to tho leaders and tho four had chances. _ A furlong further on it .seemed likely that Irish Whispers would see it out, and so she did, winning by three lengths from Dillon Wilkes, who beat the favorite throe lengths, Peter King fourth. Time, 2min 17 1-osec.

NOTES BY OLD IDENTITY. A very pleasant day’s racing—neathor perfect, course good, visitors pleased, everyone enjoying himself. A nice sociable outing, but the money was not there. When the, experts saw Nelson M‘Kinnoy and Buriue settling down to tho mastery of all else in the California Handicap they calculated that Bnrnio would stay tho better, but ho didn’t. Colohill made a ouc-horae race of tho Tennessee Handicap all tho way. Morganza It, an American-bred mare, proved a great disappointment. She was doing everything right before leaving Christchurch, but ran in the race as if she had no form at all.

Tho Colorado Handicap was a good race. M. B. Edwards deserves credit for straightening up Oaknut after lie broke at the distance. Tho crowd could not separate Irish Whispers, Desborough, and Golden Devon at the finish. ileal Lady was doing well in the early stages of the Mississippi Handicap, but when collared shut up badly, and when Merry Bingen was winning anyhow she was having to do her best to scratch homo for third money. Brutus shaped very indifferently in Die Man-o’-War Handicap. He could not even catch Pearlio Chimes, and she was twenty lengths astern of the other pair nearly all the way. Loganwood’s efforts to catch Harold Burwood were decidedly weak, and the end of a poor race was that Harold Bunvood won after leading all the way. Lazarus, favorite for the Stars and Stripes Handicap, looked like winning until a mile and a-hnlf had been covered. Ho then broke very badly. As a fact, everyone broke at one point or another. Bonny Spec’s mix was in the last 30yds, and she galloped past tho post. Money Spider’s break was in the first furlong. Merry Bingen was penalised to 48yds and did not start. The Judicial Committee disqualified Bonny Spec for second place because Townloy did not make an adequate attempt to pull out of tho gallop, and Townloy was fined £5.

Ivy Audabon was doing all right in tho early stages of the Raleigh Handicap, but died away at tho business end. Pearl Coronado shaped sensationally, for after being twice quite in the rear she finished only a length and_ a-half behind tho winner. Cottage Girl was driven a very steady race by A lick MTcllan.

As to the Fleet Handicap, for half a mile Double Event looked like catching Irish Whispers and then didn’t look like it. Irish Whispers did not pay as much as a fourth in order of betting usually docs. Three or four of them were pretty evenly backed, and Irish Whispers would have been supported more confidently if it had been a saddle race.
