OUR AMERICAN VISITORS.

TO THE EOITOJi. Sir,—lt is very pleasing to read from day to day the opinions formed by the officers and men regarding our town and tho “ fair deal ” tho boys are receiving, and you on your part have repeatedly pointed out how' well the sailors have behaved themselves on shore. T feci it my duty, as one of thousands who, if they did not actually judge the whole of the crews by the first day’s experience of some of those who came ashore, at least formed a very decided opinion and freely aired that opinion, to make amends. 1 seo now, taking tlie circumstances into account, that it was absolutely unfair to do this, and apologise and admit that tho fault was our own.

In every town there aro those whoso ideas of hospitality run to “ Have one with me,” and some of these American hoys—for they are little else, and with practically no experience whatever of the various drinks or their potency—did that day, no doubt in tho spirit of friendliness, respond to the invitation. For this I pardon them freely, and as one who goes about the streets a good deal I must say that since the first day, though shore leave lias been freely granted, the behaviour of the sailors has been most exemplary in every way, and they have proved themselves to be jolly good fellows onejnid all, and will leave our town bearing with them the good wishes of a thumping majority of our citizens.—l am, etc.. Union Jack. August 19.
