LOCAL GRADUATE IN EDINBURGH CONGRATULATION OF UNIVERSITY COUNCIL. The Professorial Board of Otago University forwarded to the meeting of the council yesterday a copy of a letter from Dr R. J. T. Bell concerning tho success in Edinburgh of Mr A._ C. Aitken ,a graduate of Otago University, who was recently awarded the degree of D.Sc. in mathematics. The Vice-Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) said it was probable that Mr Aitken would be offered a position on the mathematical staff of Edinburgh University. He thought it was only fitting that the council should send hearty congratulations to Mr Aitken on his distinguished success. Dr Benham said that the D.Sc. of Edinburgh was usually given after five rears’ work. So highly, however, was Mr Aitken’s work thought of that ho was awarded tho D.Sc. after two years’ work. Mr Morrell said it was his impression that Mr Aitken was the first New Zealand graduate to gain a D.Sc. in mathematics. Mr Rennie: He was a dux of the Albany Street School. lir Morrell: And a dux of tho Otago Boys’ High School. It was decided to forward the council’s congratulations to Mr Aitken.
