UNIVERSITY CUUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the University Council, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by the Vice-Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell, in the chair), Messrs L. D. Ritchie, J. Wallace, C. Gilray, J. Rennie, J. W. Scurr, J. A. Moore, J. S. Douglas. Drs Marshall Macdonald, J. Fitzgerald, Benhara, Sir Lindo Ferguson. SUBSIDY REFUSED. The Minister of Finance wrote stating that no action could be taken at present regarding a subsidy up to £25,000 for the museum. Dr Benham mentioned that Auckland and Wellington had already been granted big sums for the same cause, and he thought Dunedin should be similarly treated. Mr Scurr said it seemed that our city was continually being sidetracked, and if its rights were not safeguarded this sidetracking would go on. _ Ho moved that the Minister he again approached in the matter. Mr Rennie thought it might be better to wait, hut tho motion was carried unanimously. - DISTINGUISHED NEW ZEALANDER.

In connection with the announcement that Sir Ernest Rutherford was now president-elect of the Royal Society, England, tho Chairman said that they, ! as well as all other citizens, would feel 1 a pride in the knowledge that a fellowNew Zealander was arriving at such a , very high distinction. Any formal con- ! igratnlations would be lolt until a later date. MISSTATEMENTS ALLEGED.

The Registrar, New Zealand University, wrote enclosing a cutting from the Auckland ‘ Star ’ referring to the regn- ! lations whereby a medical student could : not register until ho had paid the fees i for his diploma .

The cutting referred to a student who was alleged to have been told by the Otago University that he could not obtain a diploma until he had paid £l4 14s.

The Registrar pointed out that the University of New Zealand, and nbt the Otago University, granted diplomas. He also remarked that the degree and the a,monnt involved were wrongly stated.

Sir Lindo Ferguson said that it was a pity that the newspapers in this country were so hospitable that they would pnt in any sort of rot that was sent to them.

The following decisions were reported by the Finance Committee: —(a) The chairman and registrar were authorised to answer the query of the Audit Department as to why the sum of £94 10s for buildings on the Dental School site had been retained by the University. (b) The committee resolved io receive tho requests from the Royal Insurance Company and the Mercantile and General Insurance Company for a share of the University insurances, (c) The committee resolved to decline with regret certain requisitions from Professor Strong for the purchase of pictures, (d) The council is recommended to approve of a reciprocal arrangement with Victoria College and Auckland College whereby a student of Otago University who has paid his fees for the year, and who transfers to either of these _ colleges during the year, may be permitted to continue his studies in the subjects paid for without further payment of fees, (o) The committee agreed to a request from Professor Strong that transportation charges should he paid on certain goods from America which were to bo presented to the Home Science School after being exhibited at the Exhibition, (f) A request from Dr Pickerill that he be allowed to requisition for equipment up to the amount of £750 (tho donation from the Savings Bank) was agreed to. The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE.

The Works Committee reported that the progress of the construction of the Dental School a.nd the Medical School had been handicapped by rain. The committee had before it a letter from Dr Inglis asking that all possible speed be adopted in forwarding to Wellington particulars of alterations required in the anatomy rooms to prepare them for chemistry. It was resolved that the architect he asked to proceed as rapidly as possible. The committee had before it letters from Professor Pickerill complaining of the extraordinary .delay taking place in the new Dental School buildings. It was resolved that a subcommittee, consisting of the chairman, Mr Rennio, and Mr Douglas, should, after conference with Dr Pickerill and the architect, report to the committee on the whole of the correspondence. The report was adopted. RESEARCH GRANTS.

On the motion of Dr Macdonald it was decided that the council should write to the Health Department requesting it to communicate direct with tho council in connection with research grants in future, so that the Medical School authorities might bo consulted. GENERAL,

It was decided to refer the question of the permanent establishment of a lectureship in music to the Finance Committee, with power to advertise.

It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Rennie, that application be made to the Education Board for the use of its room for meetings of the council. With regard to tho council considering the terms of appointment of tutor for nursing courses for the fifth year, it was resolved to refer the matter to the Finance and Medical Committee to report.
