A WORD FOR BOYS

MR MASSEY’S MESSAGE,

“THE UNFORGIVING MINUTE.”

The little town of Limavady, in County Londonderry, has many affectionate memories of Mr W. F. Massey, tlio late Prime Minister of New 7 Zealand, for it was there that he was born (says a London paper). One day, in 1916, when Mr Massey was visiting the Limavady Technical School, ho was asked to say a few words to the pupils and to give them a motto to keep before them through lilo. Although the request was quite unexpected Mr Massey did not hesitate lor a moment, but said: “Yes! Here \i the best motto I know, for any boy or girl starting out on life,” and, repeated the last verso of Kipling’s famous poem, ‘ If ’: — If you can fill the unforgiving minute \Vith sixty seconds’ worth or distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And—which is more—you 11 be a Man, my son!

In the school there hangs a framed copy of the verso, signed “ \V. h. Massey/’ and the pupils are proud to remember the lata statesman’s message to them.
