CRESS AS A THERAPEUTIC AGENT. “ It ig a pleasure to read a book on chess which is so clear and well printed as thd little volume entitled ‘The Elements 00 .hess,’ by Mr J. Du Mont. Owing to the! plentiful use of diagrams, the reader ia led without undue exertion from an elementary Inscription of the game to a discussion on uoro advanced problems. If chess were boomed in the Press in the same wav as ■ross-word puzzles. it would surely gain and raintain a popularity unequalled even in in an age of bridge nnd tnah-jong. For hose many ills which are attributed to boredom a course of chess might suitably be prescribed, and this hook could, with advantage, bo recommended as part of tho prescription.”—The 1 Lancet,’ Juno 13k OTAGO v. Tho Wellington C.C. gained the title, being successful in ail its engagements. The Auckland Chess Club was runner-up. An improvement in the conduct of these matches will be achieved if tho clubs eej to it that the scrutineers efficiently perform their duties as set out in the rukrt relating to telegraphic contests. Visit of Mr Kostich. —Mr Kostich. tho well-known European expert, made an eight-weeks’ tour of Now Zealand last winter, this being the first visit paid hr end of tho world's leading cboss master's to our dominion. If section plaV is necessary every effort will, as heretofore, bomado to have the two sections as equal in playing strength as possible. As accommodation may bo difficult to obtain at tho height of tho Exhibition season, intending competitors are urged either to take steps to secure board for themselves as eoon ud possible, ox to promptly get in touch with the accommodation bureau through the; Otago Chess Club. —General. In connection with matches played by telegraph, it was decided to point out tb Olubs that a scrutineer is required bv tho rules, to bo an assistant umpire, and the brunt of his errors and omissions must therefor© bo borne by tho_ club “at tho other end,” for which he is, in effect, acting.
