WHITE ISLAND DEPOSITS
VALUABLE FERTILISERS [Per United Press Association.} OPOTIRT, August 14. "White Island, which nearly a century ago was sold for two hogsheads of ruin, contains enormous deposits of valuable fertilisers, according to investigations made by the White Island Agricultural Chemical Company, the present owners of the island. The material of the old crater bed has been widely tested and found to be a fertiliser of unique quality. A careful estimate of the quantity available for shipment near the benches is over two million tons. The island also contains considerable deposits of guano and sulphur available for immediate shipment. Active operations will commence shortly with the clearing of the beach landings, tho cutting ol tramways levels, and the erection of a, water condenser. Work already done includes the erection of huts, a loading platform, mid tho formation ol tracks to the various deposits. A repetition of the disaster of 1914, when all the men on the island were killed, is highly improbable, as the new camp is situated on a part of the island where there has been no sign, of any disturbance. Tho past year s headquarters of the, company hare been Opotiki, but offices will he opened at Auckland.
