BREACHES OF AWARD

Breaches of the tea rooms and restaurant employees’ award wore alleged against Mrs M. A. Stewart, Cafe Cecil Restaurant, and Inspector P. H. Kinsman claimed a £lO penalty on each of fhreo breaches,, It was stated that defendant had failed to allow an employee a twenty-lour-hour holiday during the weeks ended June 2 and Juno 9, and had failed to keep a time and wages book.

Mr Irwin said that Mrs Stewart was seventy-two years of age. and was no longer in charge of the business, having sold it to her gon. There was no deliberate intention to break the terms of the award.

“As defendant is an elderly woman,’’ said the magistrate, “and ns she is now out of the business, 1 will impose a smaller penalty than I otherwise would do. A penalty of 10s on each cause of action will be imposed—3os in all.” DEFAULT CASES. Judgment for the undermentioned amounts (with costs) was given for plaintiffs in the following undefended eases ;—National Electric and Engineering Company v. A. H. Cunningham (Orepuki), £6 6s, goods supplied; J. Jackson Hurdle v. Hugh M'Gilvray, £2 Bs, coal supplied; J. Scott and Co., Ltd. v. W. Wilson (Clinton), £2 5s 2d. goods supplied; E. J.. Bryant v. Dauiel Be Courcy and William Campbell, £7 12s, amount of promissory note; John Edward Butler. Ltd v. Joseph Downes (Dun-ianlel), £23 19s lid, goods supplied; Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association v. P. Keogh (Mosgiel), £1 Is 6d, goods supplied.
