WELLINGTON FERRY SERVICE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —When the members of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce made their criticism of the condition of . the Mararoa, they were loud in their condemnation of the state of the ship. Tho Union Company’s reply has, however, called for no comment, to judge by.the report of the chamber's last meeting. Let ns examine the reply. The Wahine is to bo put on, but the fares have to he raised 2s Cd. Now, taking 500 crossing both ways every night as an average, this means the Union Company gets only a paltry £62 10s per night, and in twelve months the miserable pittance of oyer £19,500. Is not this the scorpion for the whip? Does the Chamber of Commerce mean to let the Union Company’s attitude stand, and let .the community be saddled to this extent without some protest? One word more. In view of the tremendously increased business resulting from‘the Exhibition, the figures given are conservative in the extreme.—l am, etc.. Observer. July 23.
