THE STUDENTS’ PROCESSION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I read a little while ago a book entitled ‘ The Fight for Character.’ I was reminded of it to-day as I witnessed tbo students’ procession. If character is revealed in any way in times of fun and frolic, how great, yea, how desperate, is the need for many in the procession to-day not to lose sight of this the greatest of all fights. The show to-day was the most degrading 1 have seen pass along Dunedin streets. One wonders how it is { possible for those who have the power . to hinder such immoral public shows not to do so. By all means let onr students have their fun, but never by ■ such methods ns have "become manifest/ during these last few years, and very’ much so to-day. To all who seek the good of young men I am sure it must have been a source* not of happiness, l but of deep regret.—l am, etc., One of Them. • July 22.

TO THE EDITOR. _ . Sir,—The 22nd inst., being carnival/ day, teachers of our local schools were i allowed two hours of their working | time to witness the capping carnival i procession. Being a Public servant | myself I was informed that if 1 took | two hours off duty I would not be paid] for such time. Are teachers treated j likewise? These capping processions take place in all the duel centres, and! if in cadi place the teachers are al-l lowed two hours off and paid ior samel it seems to me to be a, waste ot valu- i able time and money. One would think that enough time had already been lost at the beginning ot t;he year. In this instance also teachers were paid their full salaries, and only for the latter few weeks had they to present themselves at the schools for » few hours daily. In my opinion more equality should he shown to Public servants.—l am, etc., Puni.ic Servant. July 22.
