SHIP AFIRE
OUTBREAK OH CANBERRA MANY HARROW ESCAPES Press Association — By Telegraph—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Tress Association SYDNEY, dime 30. (Received June 50, at 11.15 a.m.) A disastrous fire occurred at 3 o'clock this morning on the interstate steamer Canberra, which was berthed at the King street wharf. The five had a strong hold when discovered, and the whole vessel amidships was soon a mass of flames, which reached as high as the funnel. Practically all the passenger accommodation was ablaze. Some of the passengers and the crew were trapped. Four women were brought to the wharf in a semi-conscious condition. Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting the stewards out. There were between forty and fifty people aboard at the time, /heir losses are considerable, practically all having to make their escape in night attire. Owing to the vessel being held up there were no firemen aboard, and the electric lights were disconnected at mid light.
It will be some weeks before the vessel is again seaworthy.
