CHESS

OTAGO v. AUCKLAND. The telegraph match hot ween Auckland and Otago,' which commenced on June 20, was continued on Saturday evening. At 11 p.m., when play ceased, eighty games only out of twenty had been finished. Of the twelve unfinished games it is hoped to decide some !>y consultation _in order to reduce the number to be submitted to the Adjudication Hoard in Wellington. It is impossible at present to fitate how the match will bo decided. From a perusal of some of the unfinished games it is expected that. Otago should more than hold its own. Messrs Balk, Myers, and Gale scored wins for Otago, while Mr Marlow, whose game is unfinished, is able to demonstrate a win in twelve moves. Mr T. M. Gillies acted as supervisor, and discharged his duties in his usual efficient manner. Mr A. Smith, the telegraphist, operated the wires without a hitch.
