A DISTURBING BUSINESS
WHAT ENGLAND'S DEPT PAYMENTS COST AMERICA. Ah' ,1. A. Spender makes a remark* aide statement in the ‘Weekly A\estininster ’ on the cost io the Lulled Stales of onr repayment of debt. “ It is.” lie says, “ a very disturbing business trying to gel £12o,Ot!0,UOO per annum of German exports, imbalanced by imports, distributed among the creditor nations without injuring their trade. We cannm both take these goods and make them lor ourselves, and, if we don’t, take ihem they will go into neutral markets and knock out our goods. However, we have at least two or three years to think about it, and in the meantime the whole world will have the benefit, of onr experience in (laying America. “About that an American man oT business told me last week that it- was costing Ids country a*,out £60,000,000 a year to gel £A0,000,000 out of Great. Britain, the £6(1,000.000 being roughly the cost of hoarding gold and maintaining its price in the world market. Nevertheless, the fact that we are paving causes a warm glow all ovor’th« English-speaking world, and the Germans must hope that they will acquire merit in (he same way. 1 think it is pretty safe to say that within ten years from now every creditor will be begging every debtor to let. him off lining paid.”
