THE CITIZENS’ LEAGUE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Gr Sincock stated in a speech that tho subscription io tho Citizens’ League was Ss. The secretary of the league (Air E. Calder) informed me that tho subscription was a guinea, and I have been informed that most of the present councillors paid three guineas as their subscription before the last municipal elections. In reference to the last part, this information was given to me bv a gentleman who was then a member o! the league, who also paid three guineas as his subscription. It seems strange that there should be throe amounts as subscriptions, but I suppose tho 5s is for the person who is not a candidate, Die guinea for the Labor candidate who has not the. money to spare, and is therefore not able to become a member, and the three guineas for the rich man to buy the votes of the followers of Bond street.—l am, etc., W. IV. Batchelor. April 27.
[Air Calder denies that he had any communication with Air Batchelor. Iho subscription to the league is ss, and on payment of that amount any citizen may become a member. The three guineas paid by councillors was their contribution towards the expenses of public meetings which they addressed. Any other eontributions over the 5s were treated as donations.—Ed., E.S.]
