EGG PRODUCTION
m MERRETT'S SCHEME [Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH. April 24. (Mr J. E. Merrott, who has returned from Australia, where he had been invited to give lectures at Adelaide, Melbourne. Sydney, and Briebane, stated to-day that the lectures were well attended, and at the Royal .Agricultural Show, Sydney, where ho gave a lecture on 4 The Technique of the Poultry Industry,’ the lectui'o hall was crowded out. 44 Australia,” said Mr Merrett, 4 ' e going to bo a great egg producing country, and the producers and Governments offered me all kinds of inducements to organise their export trade. In Queensland there is a compulsory pool. It is working well, though it is much in the nature of an experiment. It will effect some good. Many of the producers fight against it. and it costs a lot of money to enforce the law. There are some big farms in Victoria, and at a meeting of about twenty of the loading producers they offered me up to 3,000,000 dozen eggs fer export to London. The Government also offered to assist in fitting up a grading depot for me in conjunction with its cool store.?.” Mr Merrott slated that it was his intention to give Canterbury all the export of eggs it could spare. 44 In fact,” he dated) 44 we should double up our production in Canterbury', and make it the greatest egg producing centre in tins hemisphere. At an early date I hope to gather all the local forces together to propound a scheme for Canterbury to produce £IOO,COO worth of eggs annually for export to London, Feeing that London imports £1,800,000 annually in eggs, this is not too much for Canterbury to aim at.”
