HARBOR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING Tho monthly mooting of tho Otago Harbor Board, hold on Friday night, was alt fueled by tho chairman (Mr 1). Larnachl, Messrs J. London, ,1. M Donaid, K Ramsay, »I. M. Dickson, M.P., T. Ande'rson, J. H. Walker. H. E. Mollor. W. (low, A. Cable, Captain .Coll McDonald; and T. H. Russell. DEES OX TIMBER. Mr Walker moved the adoption of tho report of the sub-committee regarding duos on timber. The report stated ; “ Tho committee has reviewed the position generally in consequence of tho representations that were made at last meeting and tho subcommittee at its meeting, and recommends that no increase be made in tho existing dues on timber.” Mr Cable seconded the motion, on which there was some discussion initiated by Mr McDonald. The latter admitted, however, that ho had been under a misapprehension. Tho motion was carried. WORKING- OF CARGO. Tiro Dunedin and Port Chalmers Co-op. Labor Employment Association wrote asking the board to provide better facilities for tho working of cargo at the port. The "Secretary reported that ho had replied asking in what directions improvements could bo made. FINANCE. The Secret ary reported a credit balance in tho dock and general accounts of £14,856 Ms 10d. RATTRAY STREET WIDENING. The Secretary reported that the purchase of land from Larnach’s Trust for the widening of Rattray street had been completed. LAND WANTED. Tho Town Clerk wrote requesting mi area of the board’s land for five years, on which to build temporary houses for the people from, tho houses in Harrow street which will bo demolished on account of tho construction of tho highway. There was some discussion on the question whether the council wanted an area free of rental or otherwise.

Mr McDonald said he thought the council’s scheme was not a wise one 1 ; it should erect permanent iionses and pay the board some rental for the ground. The matter was ultimately referred to a sub-committee for a report to tho board. 'l'lio Secretary (Mr Bardsley) : Should (ho committee* not get some indication whether the board expects rent or no mil ? ... .

Mr Bussell: Of course they will have to pay rent. Tho Chairman: T think the general fooling is that the board will bo looking for rent. .Mr M‘Donald: Looking lor a small rent. Mr Loudon: Vcs; not a big rent. EXHIBITION MATTER. The New Zealand and South Seas ExIrbiton Company wrote asking the board’s consent to the gazetting of closing of the road on the eastern side of the area. —Granted. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. It was decided to hold tho election of chairman for the ensuing year at a meeting of tho board at 4 o’clock on May 22 piTor to a meeting of tho Standing Committee. WATER DEPTHS. The Harbor Master (Captim J. MacLean) reported that the low-water depths at various parts of tho harbor were : Entrance north channel, 57ft; Harrington Point bend, 53ft; Hamilton Bay, 26ft; Deborah Bay, 50ft. A plan of Port Chalmers showed tho depth at wharves. Victoria Channel, oil Stinking Point patch, with 18jft. l‘rom KilgcmCs Point to pile 57 tho least water was 29ft. [ A plan of Dunedin showed the depth at tho wharves. The Rattray street wharf abreast of R and S sheds should be cleaned out as early as possible.
