SHIPPING STRIKE

The Marama was delayed for a short time, four members of the crew being missing. However, they reported for duty after the vessel had left the wharf, and were put aboard by launch. DEMAND FOR PAY. SHIPPING COMPANY REFUSES. MELBOURNE, February 14. (Received February 14, at 10.45 a.m.) Excitement was caused at the Union Steam Ship Company’s offices when thirtyfour members of the crew of the Moeraki, who had been discharged in accordance with the order of the court, entered the outer office and demanded to see the manager. Previously the men attended tho Mercantile Marino oliice, where they should have been paid off, but refused to accept any money because the pay sheet showed only tho amount due to them from February 1 to February 11. They claimed that a record of all tho wages earned by them since they joined the vessel should be shown on the pay sheet. After teaching to the Union Steam Ship Company’s office, the spokesman interviewed a responsible official of tho company', and demanded that the men be paid, notwithstanding that tho men knew they could not he paid off, except in the presence of a shipping master. Tho money was refused, and the company’s solicitor arrived, anil argued with the men, thou a body of policemen came on the scene and ordered tho men out. They left quietly, but it is understood that they intend to renew' their claim to-day.
