The Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister of Railways and Public Works, and Postrna.ster(lenoral) returned to Dunedin from Centra! Otago last evening. He. received deputations Ihis° morning, and later on attended the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at AVmgatni. Mr Coates will spend the week-end in Dunedin. Ho leaves for Invercargill by tho 8.50 mail train on Monday, and will spend Tuesday there, attending to departmental business. On Wednesday he will go to Tumsdcn, To -Allan, and" Manapomi. He. will return to Dunedin on Thursday, and leave for Christchurch on Friday morning. The Hon. Sir Maui Pomaro (Minister of Public Health), Sir Trubv King I Director of Child Welfare), Air A. K. Clayton (of the Health Department, Wellington!, and Air A. J. Conway (private secretary to Sir Alani Pomaro) arrived by motor about 10 o’clock last night.. The, party came south by tho first express from Christchurch yesterday and detrained at Scac.liff, where a visit of inspect inn was paid to the mental hospital, and they then completed tho journey to Dunedin by car. They left here early _this morning by motor ear to visit, (he Karitano Hospital and SoaelifT Menial Hospital. They afterwards joined the first express at Palmerston, en route for AVellingion. Mr E. F. Evans, civil engineer, who has had charge of the railway eonslrnction works between Beaumont and Miller’s Flat for a, considerable time, is now in charge of tho extensive drainage scheme under Government control which is to bo carried out on tho Taieh Plain. Hip Lawrence Borough Council, at its last meeting, passed a resolution congratulating Mr Evans on his promotion.

An Auckland Association message states that Mr Justice Ostler has been appointed to the Wellington district, with headquarters at Wellington. Be sits at New Plymouth on Tuesday and then goes to Nelson .

Melville, who is severing bis connection with the Otago Education Board after forty-three years’ service, was met on Thursday afternoon by the woodwork and cookery instructors of the board and presented with a. smoker’s cabinet suitably inscribed. Air W. C. Wakelin, the senior woodwork instructor, in making tho presentation, referred to the cordial relationship existing between Air AJelville and the instructors, and tho esteem in which he was held as supervisor of manual and technical instruction in the Otago education district. On behalf of the instructors present he thanked Air Alolville for the invariable courtesy with which he had always considered their requirements. Mr Melville, in reply, stated that the presentation came as a surprise, and that tho work of the manual and technical branch had been one of pleasure to him owing to the moderate demands of the instructors, who at all times had cheerfully accepted decisions whether favorable or otherwise. He expressed his thanks to them for their handsome present. Afternoon tea was then dispensed by the ladies.
