The Knights of the Round Table, founded in IT2O. tendered a dinner to General Sir William Birdwoocl, who, in responding to the toast of his health, which was proposed by Sir Trevor Dawson, managing director of tho Anchors Company, paid a tribute to the Australian soldiers, who, he said, were the finest natural-born soldiers in the world. They were wonderfully resourceful, as an instance of which ho mentioned the. utilisation of jam tins on Gallipoli in the' manufacture of crude bombs. Had they been furnished with Anchors bombs, which Sir Trevor Dawson subsequently supplied to the forces in France, the Australians would have overwhelmed and defeated the Turks, He recognised that Australians accepted democracy, but he hoped they would not allow themselves to he dominated bv aliens.—A. and N.Z.
