REAL BRITISH PATRIOT

JOINED ARMY WHEN FIFTY-FIVE. A story of true patriotism was told at a London inquest last month on a wheelwright named Thomas Harrup Reed, who was found ill in the street and died in a hospital. Mr Reed was fifty-five years of age in 1915, but so determined was he to “ do his bit” that ho succeeded in joining the Army by declaring that ho was only fortyfive. lie was wounded in France in 1916, but would not apply for a pension, as he said ho wonted to servo his country, and not make money out of the war. The coroner commented on Mr Reed's meritorious conduct, and said that his strenuous life in the war ns a wheelwright possibly had something to do with his death. A verdict of death from natural causes was re turned.
