MATTHEWS HEATH RAY

INVENTOR’S EYESIGHT IMPERILLED. NEW YORK, August 5. Mr Grin dell Matthews, the inventor of the “ death ray,” is under treatment for a serious eye ailment. He is almost totally blind in one eye, and the other is gravely affected. Specialists whom lie consulted refuse to discuss the case. Mr Matthews’s own invention is regarded as the cause, and it is believed the injury proves there is a danger of the “ death ray ” recoiling upon the operator. It is recalled that Madame Curio was rendered blind in one eye while experimenting with radium. Dir Matthews told friends here that he had a premonition of danger involved in his work, and conducted scores of tests with such substances as lead and rubber, which could be used as a protective screen.
