DAMAGE AT PANAMA CANAL. An Australian paper states that a great deal of trouble is being caused in the Panama Canal bv the dam. or pliolns calva, which is destroying parts of the ament bottom and the. sea walls of the wonderful waterway. It is reported .that already damage to the extent of £200.009 has been done by the clam. The destructive little creatures tunnel through rock and concrete again and again, until one or the other is riddled and perforated and broken np. and the earth is then let through and forced up, forming small islands, and so blocking traffic. Every now and then one of these islands bobbed up in the middle of the canal, and for quite a time no one was able to explain why. Some thought, a landslide must have occurred and dislodged the cement bed, so as to allow a slab of earth to rise. The discovery of the clams’ work came about in this way : Several ordinary landslides had occurred, and, to prevent a repetition, certain hills were levelled so that they could no longer slide down hy their own weight towards the canal. Hie work wa- finished, and the engineers congratulated themselves on their success, when, lo! one morning an island (sspped up in the middle of the channel, and at the same time a cavernous hole was revealed in the bank nearby. Here was something quite now and mysterious in landslides. Piesenily the dredges brought up great lumps of concrete, and these were found to be riddled with ho’es. Then everything became dear, for wedged in some of these holes wore the clams, which had made the tunnels by using their shells as a rasp, turning from side to side while they held on to the rock or concrete with their foot, as it is called.
